I’ve never knit anything for newborns, but with four wee ones expected to make an appearance between November and next February I figured that I should start knitting.
I found the Puerperium Cardigan pattern on ravelry and immediately fell in love with it. I am a fan of assymetrical cardigans and think that getting babies into pullovers is a huge hassle so buttons are so important. The mom doesn’t know if she is having a little girl or boy so I went with gray which is neutral. I thought of adding different colored buttons but couldn’t find any that I liked so these wooden buttons were it. I think they add an interesting and different texture to it. And boy oh boy did that thing fly off the needles.
And of course, with so much yarn left I knit a matching hat. It is another Simple Beanie aka Lollipop, it is a wonderfully mindless knit which I have already tried twice before.
I have a little yarn left so I just might consider making some matching baby booties, the only problem is that I hated the yarn, it wasn’t bad or anything but the color bore me out of my mind.
But overall it was satisfying knitting, knowing that a little baby will be wearing something that was handmade with love, is very satisfying. When my daughter was born my grandmother knit her a beautiful wrap around sweater so did my mother’s uncle’s wife ( we are a complicated family). It is the same sweater they have been knitting for years for ever expectant mother and boy oh boy did I love those sweater.
